Bikes

I worked in a bicycle shop in college, and for a couple years after graduation. This gave me the opportunity to acquire quite a few bicycles over the years.

Currently in my stable, I have the following:

1938(?) Paramount Track Bike (pic)
- I bought this one off of Ebay for too much money. Bike is original except for the rims, which should be wood, and someone welded an extra brace on the seat stays for the addition of a brake caliper. Right now it needs to be completely restored.
1938(?) Hercules (pic)
- This one was a freebie. The flip-flop hub was what caught my eye when I saw it sitting in a junk pile. It took me a couple of years to track down the age, and verified that it's from the late '30s. I have to say that the craftsmanship on this bike is remarkable. 4X laced wheels, washers on the nipples, machined bearing cones throughout, rides pretty nicely. The seat was added, as well as the chainguard at some point. I added the rear brake. I have no idea how it was set up originally. Fenders appear to be original, pedals aren't. Also the cranks are drilled for 1/2" pedals even though it's a 3-piece crank. First time I've ever seen something like that.

195? Schwinn Jaguar Mark IV (pic) w/ 2 speed hub
- Seen better days, but still rides nice. I paid $75 for this one. The linkage for the rear hub was missing when I picked this one up, so I put one together out of a brake cable & a turnbuckle. Not original, but it works, as do the light & horn.

195? Schwinn Debutante (pic)
- Still need a seat for this one, but can't seem to find one on Ebay. I picked this one for $100 some years back, I needed a match for the Jaguar. Rides nice, except that the seat sucks. Horn works.

195? Schwinn Hollywood? (pic) w/ 24" wheels
- Salvaged from the garbage. Missing the chainguard, so I'm not 100% sure of the model. Seat needs recovering, but otherwise it's OK.

196? Schwinn Traveller (pic) w/ SA 3 speed
- Probably my favorite of all my old bikes, simply because the frame is large enough for me. This one was another save from the garbage, and cleaned up fairly well. Back fender is dinged up, but it rides very nice. Just have to find the right seat.

196? Schwinn Traveller (pic) w/ 2 speed kickback
- Think I paid $20 for this one. I needed a match for the black one, and brought it home. The kickbacks are cool because you don't come across them very often, they are a pain though because it changes gears every time you come to a stop. Generator sets on this one & previous one both work.

196? Schwinn Racer (pic) w/ SA 3 speed
- Garbage bike. It was painted black with brush paint when I got it. Too big of a mess to clean it off, so I stripped it and paited it white. Missing decals and pinstriping, but it rides great. Wrong seat as well.

196? Schwinn Racer (pic) w/ SA 3 speed
- Garbage bike, just picked it up for a match for the white one.

1964 Schwinn Varsity (pic) w/ 26" wheels
- Freebie from the junk pile at the bike shop. I was rooting around and saw the welded on shifters on the down tube, not something very common on the Schwinn 10 speeds of this era. Most had them mounted on the stem. Again this one was painted black when I got it, but I was able to remove the black paint. The original paint job didn't look that bad. If I'm not mistaken, the varsity was a 26" wheel for the first two years. The first year it was an 8 speed. I ended up letting my oldest son ride this one.

1969 Schwinn Apple Krate (pic) w/ w/w tires
- Picked this one up for $150 when I was working at the shop. Seat is a recover, & the front tire was replaced. It's supposed to have redline tires, but the guy I bought it from had the whitewalls installed when he was a kid. I thought they looked OK, so I left them on.

197? Schwinn Varsity (pic)
- 15$ at a local garage sale. It was missing the wheels, but I had a spare set. Actually the bike came with a whole bunch of other parts I bought for the $15, and I decided to put it back together for my oldest son.

1976 Schwinn Scrambler (pic) my first bike
- Bought this in 1976, at Old Chicago Schwinn. Bike has been repainted more than once, although a number of parts have been replaced over the years. It's pretty much all there, just need some decals, a new set of grips, and a pinstripe on the chainguard. Weighs 48 pounds, 5 less than the Apple Krate.

197? Jeunet Franche-Comte (pic)
- Another junk pile find. Brought this one home just so I could play around with old Simplex and Mafac stuff. Not much of a ride, as it's too small for me, but it was free.

198? Fuji Gran Tourer SE (pic)
- Given to me by my neighbor, who picked it up for $1 at a garage sale. This bike is practically brand new. Typical late 70's components, & steel wheels. This is my son's current ride.

198? Schwinn Traveller (pic)
- Put this one together for my wife, but it just collects dust now that she has her Sierra. Frame was free, the parts came from here and there.

198? Schwinn Cruiser (pic) single speed
- 4$ at a local second hand store. I plan on replacing the rims with alloy ones, and putting on a set of Sturmey Archer hubs at some point.

198? Schwinn Cruiser (pic) w/ SA 5 speed & drum brakes
- Frame was free, although it started out as a school bus yellow Heavy Duty. Currently has Sturmey Archer drum brake hubs, w/ an internal 5 speed on the rear. I had to replace the 46T sprocket with a 39T because the gearing was too high. Rides nice, although you have to make sure the axle nut are really cranked down so the wheel doesn't shift when you crank on it.

1984(?) Schwinn Sting Ray (pic)
- This was originally a "Polo Bike", from '84 I believe. It was the most god awful red & yellow, so my son & I customized it a bit. We painted the frame with Testors & an airbrush, installed a 24" fork & a 16" wheel. The back wheel is a Bendix blue band 2 speed kickback. We also added a sissy bar I had laying around, a white seat & grips, some older handlebars, replaced the name plate (the old one was red & yellow) , and threw on a chrome fender.

The daily riders:

1976 Schwinn Letour II (pic)
Pretty much stock except for the following:
  - Brooks B17 saddle
  - Wolber Super Champ rims
  - Tioga 27x1 3/8 Bloodhound tires
  - DT clamp on SunTour shifters
  - 44cm. handlebars
  - ATB stem, because I couldn't find a tall enough 21mm. stem and had to use this one
  - Dia Compe Gran Compe brake levers
  - fenders, generator, rack, bag
  - I also added Q/R levers for the brakes so I could get the tires past the brake shoes

199? Rivendell Heron (pic)
This is my baby, it rides like a dream, perfect in every way:
  - Reynolds 531 tubing
  - SunTour Superbe Pro brakes, cranks (172.5 39/53), derailleurs
  - Campagnolo Record LF hubs - 40h rear / 36h front
  - Chris King headset
  - SunTour sealed bearing bottom bracket
  - Sun CR18 rims w/ butted SS spokes
  - Nitto Technomic stem
  - Modollo 44cm handlebars
  - SunTour 7 speed wishbone Accushift shifters
  - Brooks Professional saddle
  - SunTour Superbe Pro seat post - which is the wrong size. Frame needs a 27.2mm, and this one is a 26.4 w/ a .6 shim.
Keeping my eyes open on Ebay
  - Cheapo pedals, until I get new bearings in my Superbe Pros
  - Also - computer, generator, bag, and rack (not currently installed)

2000 Schwinn Sierra 700 (pic)
Bought this bike for myself, but the frame was marked a 21", when it was really a 19", so it's my wife's now.
Nice bike, even though I don't like Shimano.
  - Cateye battery headlight & taillight
  - Alloy rack
